The North Carolina State Fair was the location of the North Carolina Department of Labor’s 2007 Apprentice Contests. Hundreds of students and their families traveled from across the state to participate in this year’s events, which ran from October 15th to 19th.
The Apprenticeship program has been in existence for over 65 years. In 2007 the NC Department of Labor had 2,000 accredited high school and adult apprenticeship programs with 15,000 participating apprentices from across the state. As apprentices students are taught hands-on skills, as well as, valuable classroom instruction which provides them with a competitive edge in the workforce. The apprentices are paid for their work and as they increase their knowledge and skill their pay increases, as well.
The 2007 Annual Apprentice Contests were held in five skilled occupations: masonry, HV/AC-R, electrical, carpentry, plumber/pipefitter. Contestants competed for a variety of prizes and awards, ranging from tools of their trade to cash prizes.
This year, NCHBA President Paul Mullican, NCHBA President-elect Ray Rhodes, and NCHBA Vice President Frank Wiesner volunteered to participate in judging the carpentry contest, which was held on Thursday, October 18, 2007. The contestants are given five hours to complete a project presented to them as a blueprint and consisting of residential and commercial building methods. Contestants were judged on a variety of criteria including, neatness, safety, and productivity. |
