JUNE IS AFFORDABLE HOUSING MONTH - BUILDERS BLITZ 2006 PDF Print E-mail

During the week of June 5, 2006, 1,000 professional builders will help to build more than 400 Habitat for Humanity homes, housing more than 1,000 people. The homes will be built from start to finish in 130 communities throughout the United States.

Together as a team, the home building industry is sending a message throughout the country that affordable housing can be a reality. In North Carolina alone, 63 homes will be built during the blitz.

Roots in North Carolina
The national event got its start right here in North Carolina. In 2003 and 2004, Tom Gipson of Raleigh led a group from the Home Builders Association of Raleigh/Wake County to build dozens of houses. Homes were constructed in a week from the foundation to the finished product. Builders worked with their suppliers, vendors and subcontractors in a joint effort to build these homes at little or no cost to the local Habitat affiliate. Through the generous donations of time and building materials, the builders in Wake County have completed several homes in the past three years. The Raleigh project was such a success that it has been expanded to a nationwide event. Gipson, Mark Massengil, Mike Golder and other Raleigh builders visited towns and communities across A merica to promote this nationwide Home Builders Blitz.

“Builders Blitz is an incredible concept in my mind because it allows professional builders to participate in making significant contributions to their communities by doing what they do best,” said Gipson, who is the builder chair for the national Home Builders Blitz 2006.

While challenging, Habitat for Humanity homes are easy to construct in five days, especially for a building professional.

Home Builders' Role
Home builders and their associations are challenged to fully accomplish the building of a home or homes in five days, working with their subcontractors and suppliers to deliver the houses at no cost to the Habitat affiliate. Before the event this week, builders attended monthly meetings and participated in team fund-raising activities. Builders were asked to pay their vendors or suppliers, while also leveraging relationships in the building industry to seek donations of materials and labor to provide the house at the lowest cost possible. While working on site during the five days of construction, builders will be able to meet the family and involve them in building their new home.

Participation
The event is open to all local and national builders willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity affiliates to minimize the cost of building Habitat homes in their local communities. Builders will donate labor and donations for building materials. As a result, an HFH affiliate will continue regular house-building efforts while bringing in new, highly skilled volunteers to build additional houses in a concentrated period of time.

Habitat affiliates provide Builders support
Each Habitat for Humanity affiliate has secured land for the build and managed site development by providing lots with foundations, drives and utilities in place. The affiliate will furnish builders with house plans and will obtain all required permits for the homes. Local Habitat for Humanity staff has provided support for fund raising, publicity and marketing.

Habitat for Humanity International staff provided development support by reaching out to national building industry partners on behalf of Habitat affiliates. The HFHI media relations staff fully supported the event by publicizing it nationally and by assisting in local public relations efforts.

Benefits of Builders Blitz
Builders will make a significant difference in 130 communities and in people’s lives by making affordable housing available to low income families. Home builders participating in Home Builders Blitz 2006 will make homes possible through their hard work and industry expertise. Through this event, builders will receive local publicity and recognition for their efforts.
