2006 NCHB Educational Foundation Scholarship Winners Print E-mail

The North Carolina Home Builders Educational Foundation has selected the 2006 scholarship winners. The scholarship awards are presented to either four-year college students entering their junior or senior year, or two-year technical school students entering their second year who have declared their major in a construction-related field. Students are nominated by members of the NCHBA and must be family members (i.e. children, step-children, or grandchildren) of NCHBA member firms. Scholarships are based on a combination of need and merit; first preference goes to students attending college or technical school in North Carolina.

This year's recipients are:

Jennifer DeSimone of Charlotte, NC. DeSimone is a second year recipient and majors in Civil Engineering at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. DeSimone is a member of the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society and Treasurer of the Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity. This past year she was a Structural Engineering Intern at Framatome-ANP and was a student recruiting assistant for UNC Charlotte’s College of Engineering.

Timothy S. Johnson, Jr. of Greenville, NC. Johnson majors in Building Construction Technology at Pitt Community College. Since 1997 Johnson has worked part-time as a Site Manager for Bill Hall Builders, Inc.  He also enjoys building small dog houses and barns for family members to keep up with the current techniques in craftsmanship. He has chosen Building Construction Technology and Business management, as his father and step-father are both in the Construction Industry. He also plans to earn his Real Estate license.

Curtis McLawhorn of Ayden, NC. McLawhorn majors in Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University. He is a member of Habitat for Humanity at NCSU, past member of the National Honor Society and past competitor at the SkillsUSA competition where he was a Gold medalist at the state level in 2003 and 2004, and a Gold medalist at the National level in 2004.  He was also placed 2nd at the NC Department of Labor Apprentice Contest in 2003. He has worked part-time in past for Williams Filters, Curtis Spencer HVAC, Tim Jarmen Builders, and presently for Frank McLawhorn Construction Company.

Donald Page of Pfafftown, NC.  Page majors in Construction Management at East Carolina University. Page came to the decision to enroll in Construction Management from his past experience building homes for impoverished families with his church group and also through his experience working at West End Construction in Winston-Salem, NC.  Page has had a stellar career as a high school athlete in football and basketball, where he was captain his junior and senior years.

Congratulations to Jennifer, Timothy, Curtis, and Donald for their hard work and dedication to the construction industry. We wish you the best of luck in the future as you complete your education and pursue your chosen goals.
